Our Lady of Lourdes: Apparitions, Healing Waters, the Christian Wine Inspired by It
Introduction:
In 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a young peasant girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous, in the small town of Lourdes, France. These apparitions would forever transform Lourdes into one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in the Catholic world. At Trinitas Cellars, we honor this sacred story through our Marian Series with Our Lady of Lourdes Cabernet Sauvignon, a Christian wine inspired by faith, healing, and the transformative power of grace.
This Marian wine reflects the enduring message of Lourdes: that God meets humanity in humility, offering hope, restoration, and peace.
The Apparitions:
Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, Bernadette experienced 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle, a quiet, rocky outcrop along the Gave River. The Lady appeared simply dressed in white, carrying a rosary, and called for prayer, penance, and trust in God. During one apparition, Bernadette was instructed to dig into the ground, from which a spring of water began to flow, later associated with physical and spiritual healing.
In 1862, after careful investigation, the Catholic Church officially recognized the apparitions, affirming their authenticity and spiritual significance. Today, Lourdes welcomes approximately 5–6 million pilgrims and visitors each year, making it one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world.
The Healing Gratto:
The Grotto of Massabielle remains the spiritual heart of Lourdes. Pilgrims gather there to pray, touch the stone walls, and collect water from the spring , a visible sign of God’s mercy. While countless visitors share personal testimonies of healing, the Church has officially recognized over 70 medically unexplained cures, following rigorous medical and theological review.
For many, Lourdes offers healing that goes beyond the physical, restoring faith, peace, and trust in God’s presence during suffering.
Why It Matters to the Catholic Faith:
Marian apparitions such as Our Lady of Lourdes hold profound importance within Catholic tradition. They reflect Mary’s role as intercessor and spiritual mother, drawing people closer to Christ through prayer, humility, and conversion. Lourdes stands as a reminder that faith is lived not only through doctrine, but through encounter.
In Catholic tradition, wine holds deep sacramental meaning, most notably in the Eucharist, where it becomes a symbol of joy, sacrifice, and divine grace. This sacred symbolism inspired Trinitas Cellars to create a Christian wine that invites reflection and reverence during life’s meaningful moments.
Trinitas’ Marian-Inspired Wine:
Our Lady of Lourdes Cabernet Sauvignon holds special significance as the second Marian wine released by Trinitas Cellars, continuing our commitment to honoring sacred stories through thoughtfully crafted wines.
For Trinitas Cellars General Manager Sonyia Grabskis, Lourdes carries a deeply personal meaning. Years before her son was born, a close family member experienced a profound healing connected to Lourdes — a moment that ultimately led her family to transition from Lutheranism to Catholicism. This lived experience of faith shaped the intentional release of this wine during the 20th anniversary year of that healing.
In time, the story came full circle when Sonyia’s son was later born on February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes , a date already etched into her family’s spiritual journey.
Sourced from Pelkan Ranch Vineyard in Knights Valley, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers rich notes of black currant, ripe plum, and subtle violet, supported by structured tannins and a graceful, lingering finish. This Christian wine is well-suited for moments of reflection, shared meals, and gatherings rooted in gratitude.
